Help Haiti: Donate to relieve suffering after the earthquake.

Where to give in support of Haiti and those suffering after the earthquake?

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere and one of the poorest in the world. For years it has struggled with political greed and corruption. In addition, its embedded beliefs in Voodoo have left it covered in a pall of spiritual darkness.

I know that the work we were able to do through our grassroots networks in Zimbabwe during famine and other difficult times was very effective because we worked so closely with those who were most affected by the results. If things were done efficiently and effectively, their family
and friends benefited. If there was waste or pilfering, their family and friends lost out on the potential benefit.

The local headmasters, pastors, community workers were super. Local government was
cooperative and people pitched in to help each other. Much will be the same in Haiti, though the cultures and expectations are different in each place.

People do not tend to think of stealing from smaller organisati
ons when they know the people involved as they do from big operations where they think the money will keep flowing forever. That's why I tend to give my donations through grassroots efforts, through people I know who are on the ground getting sweaty each day to make a difference.

I know staff or volunteers in each of the following organisations.

The big organisations can do some things the little guys can't, but it's really apples and oranges by comparison. Both are needed, but the long term memory of compassion on a human level will happy person-to-person in ways totally unreported by the media.

TEAR Fund has launched a full-scale coordinated relief effort for the
victims of yesterday's violent earthquake. Our partners said yesterday that there was chaos and confusion as people grapple with the scale of the disaster. While there is no official death toll some experts are predicting the loss of life to be more than 100,000.

The powerful earthquake shook Haiti causing a hospital and several other buildings to collapse in the Western Hemisphere's poorest nation. The 7.0-magnitude earthquake was centered just 10 miles southwest of Port-au-Prince, the capital. The earthquake was relatively shallow at a depth of five miles, the U.S. Geological Survey said. Shallow earthquakes can cause more damage. Witnesses reported that survivors were trying to pull people out of piles of concrete and twisted metal.
