Best Bookstore in Your Town?

“Leaving any bookstore is hard, especially on a day in August, when the street outside burns and glares, and the books inside are cool and crisp to the touch; especially on a day in January, when the wind is blowing, the ice is treacherous, and the books inside seem to gather together in colorful warmth. It's hard to leave a bookstore any day of the year, though, because a bookstore is one of the few places where ll the cantankerous, conflicting, alluring voices of the world co-exist in peace and order and the avid reader is as free as a person can possibly be, because she is free to choose among them.” -Jane Smiley

Where's your favourite bookstore?

In Denver it must be the Tattered Cover.

Noblesville, Indiana might like an alternative to the big shops out on 37. Try The Wild Book Store on the square. Cafes and pubs are handy too.

In Sarasota, FL it's gotta be Sarasota News & Books with a cafe thrown in to boot!

In Auckland, is it Jason's Hard to Find But Worth the Effort for secondhand and Unity Books or TimeOut for new?

Unity Books challenges us thus:

If every bookshop tells a story...

If bookshops are compared to a summer's day, which one comes up
smelling of roses? If bookshops were horticulturalists, which one knows its
onions? If bookshops supported literary magazines, it'd make a big
difference. If your choice of bookshop could make a difference, which
bookshop brings you the small town closures? If small is beautiful, Unity is
still very attractive. If God does not play dice with the universe, which
bookshop keeps Wild Swans in the pet section? If you can keep your head
when all about you are losing theirs, meet me by the philosophy shelves. If
Jeffery Archer was trading inside, which bookshop would you be outside? If
Dorothy Parker shopped at Unity, I wouldn't be surprised. If a picture's
worth a thousand words, that's a hundred and twenty-eight of them and
are you getting the picture?

If you care about books...

Sydney has Glee Books for secondhand and Berkelouw for both. I find Sydney's bookstores seem to cluster in certain areas, making it easier for visitors to fossick through several in morning. Usually there's tea or coffee readily available. So check out Glebe or Oxford when you're in town.

I especially love independent bookstores. Nothing like browsing and being surrounded by so many others and the choice is all mine!
