"Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art....
It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things that give value to survival. "

"We are not necessarily doubting that God will do the best for us;
we are wondering how painful the best will turn out to be."

"A man can no more diminish God's glory by refusing to worship Him
than a lunatic can put out the sun by scribbling the word "darkness" on the walls of his cell."

"Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another:
"What! You too? I thought I was the only one."

"You don't have a soul. You are a soul. You have a body."

"We read to know that we are not alone."

"I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen:
not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else."

"You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me."

"To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements. Lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket, safe, dark, motionless, airless, it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable. To love is to be vulnerable."
